SIN AND FORGIVENESS

Narrated / Authority of: Abu Huraira
that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah(swt) be upon him), from among the things he reports from his Lord (mighty and sublime be He), is that he said: "A servant [of Allah] committed a sin and said: 'O Allah, forgive me my sin.' And He (glorified and exalted be He) said: 'My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them.' Then he sinned again and said: 'O Lord, forgive me my sin.' And He (glorified and exalted be He) said: 'My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them.' Then he sinned again and said: 'O Lord, forgive me my sin.' And He (glorified and exalted be He) said: 'My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for sins.  Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.'" It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari).
Hadith Qudsi no:  33

Hadeeses are the sayings and doings of Rasool(s.a.w) and the Sahabas, but Hadees Qudsi is the sayings of Allah(swt) Himself through the Prophet,  apart from the Quran.  These are of very high quality truth.  From the above Hadees Qudsi, we come to know very very clearly that Allah(swt) is just waiting to forgive His servants, no matter how great a sin they might commit or how many times repeatedly they have committed it or whatever sin it might be.  As long as it is between Allah(swt) and His servants, Allah(swt) is just waiting for the person to seek forgiveness, and He is ready to forgive; even if it might be the highest sin of selling one’s soul to Satan, if the person can come out of it and seek forgiveness, Allah(swt) is ready to forgive them.

Save him who repenteth and believeth and doth righteous work; as for such, Allah will change their evil deeds to good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.
Quran: 25 - 70

However, you must understand one thing very very clearly; Allah(swt) is the most most Just that could ever be, and He would not do an atom of injustice to any of His creations, living or nonliving.  With this being the case, if a person sins against another person, his sins however small or great it may be, will not be forgiven by Allah(swt) unless and until the person who was sinned against forgives the sinner.  That is the justice, and benevolence of Allah(swt).  He gives the sufferer the right to demand what he wants from the one who has wounded him but other than this, whatever the sin might be, however great or small it might be, or how many times the sinner keeps repeatedly committing it Allah(swt) is prepared to forgive them, for He knows pretty well that this earth is the place where one can seek forgiveness for all his sins and gain virtues in abundance.  Allah(swt) does not want to spoil our only  chance of  building and decorating our paradise to magnificent levels and mighty proportions and making it one of the  most blissful and joyous place to live in forever.

As mentioned earlier, I want to repeat it again; paradise and hell are of exactly the same proportion or sizes for the Messenger of Allah, Prophets, each one of us, and the jinns including Satan.  No one gets extra big or extra small hell or heaven.  Each one of them is exactly of the same size given to each and every one of us, all the heaven given to all of us is of the very same size and also the size of the hell given to each of us will be of the same size, but much different than the size of the paradise.  It is one’s virtues or sins, which they do and send that would make their heaven tremendously huge and mighty, blissful and happy; and the most joyous place to live in.  Hell, on the other hand, is the most drastic, degraded, wicked, perverted, nasty place for anyone to dwell in at anytime or anywhere.

"Because of (the deeds) which your (own) hands sent forth: for Allah is never unjust to His servants.
Quran- 8:51

Allah(swt), the Exalted, says in the Quran: O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins.  Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Quran -  (39:53)

Allah(swt) in His infinite benevolence, mercy, and grace gives us innumerable, unlimited opportunities to erase, nullify, abolish, and invalidate all our sins.  For example; Allah(swt) has not made any worship compulsory without it being of tremendously great advantage to wipe out our sins and to earn tremendous virtues.  It is one of main reasons, He has made some of the amals or acts compulsory or obligatory.

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah(swt) be upon him) say: "Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind.  O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you.  O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it is.'"
Hadith Qudsi
Hadith Qudsi  no: 34

As a matter of fact, when the person believes and says whole-heartedly the kalima, Laa ilaaha illalaah; all his previous sins get abrogated or nullified irrespective of however great their sin might have been – what more all their past sin gets converted to virtues (Quran: 25-70).  This is the first blessing of Allah(swt) to the one who accepts Allah(swt) as the ONE and only sole power-worthy to be worshiped.  Even after coming into Islam, if they commit sins and Allah(swt) knows very well that human beings or jinn would definitely sin and they cannot live without sinning, they can use the most powerful weapon against sin; which is salah (prayer).

(the freed slave of 'Uthman bin 'Affan) I saw 'Uthman bin 'Affan asking (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution (and when it was brought) he poured water from it over his hands and washed them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out. Then he washed his face thrice and (then) forearms up to the elbows thrice, then passed his wet hands over his head and then washed each foot thrice. After that 'Uthman said, "I saw the Prophet performing ablution like this of mine, and he said, 'If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rak'at prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then (ALL) his past sins will be forgiven. '
Sahih – ul- Bukhari
Volume 1, Book 4, Number 165:

Narrated Humran:

By salah, all of one’s sins are forgiven ;  provided it was a sin between him and his lord.  If the sin was done on someone else, then the wronged person would have to forgive the sinner and only then, the sinner can be free of it and only then Allah(swt)  would forgive them – In case of a person who has newly embraced Islam Allah(swt) would in the hereafter call the person against whom the person has sinned and ask them as to whether they would take the compensation that Allah(swt) has for them in lieu of the sins committed against them by this person and the compensation would be so great that that none would be able to refuse it – even here Allah(swt) would ask the person to forgive them only then Allah(swt) would forgive them.  The smallest heaven a person would be given would be ten times the size of this Earth, and the smallest Hell a person would be given would be like a footwear which when worn would make their brain boil.

There are even incidences where person who had committed zina comes to the Prophet saying, “Ya Rasoolullah, I have been ruined” and Rasool(s.a.w) turns his face, meaning to say,  - “Go away, repent and seek Allah(swt)’s forgiveness instead of advertising your sins”.

A man from Bani Aslam came to Allah(swt)'s Apostle while he was in the mosque and called (the Prophet ) saying, "O Allah(swt)'s Apostle! I have committed illegal sexual intercourse." On that the Prophet turned his face from him to the other side, whereupon the man moved to the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and said, "O Allah(swt)'s Apostle! I have committed illegal sexual intercourse." The Prophet turned his face (from him) to the other side whereupon the man moved to the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and repeated his statement.  The Prophet turned his face (from him) to the other side again.  The man moved again (and repeated his statement) for the fourth time.  So when the man had given witness four times against himself, the Prophet called him and said, "Are you insane?" He replied, "No." The Prophet then said (to his companions), "Go and stone him to death." The man was a married one.  Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari said: I was one of those who stoned him.  We stoned him at the Musalla ('Id praying place) in Medina.  When the stones hit him with their sharp edges, he fled, but we caught him at Al-Harra and stoned him till he died.
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith
Hadith 7.196
Narrated by
Abu Huraira

There was an incident where the person came and acknowledged his sin (zina) and Rasool(s.a.w) told him to complete his Salah for the Iqama was said and after Salah, when he came back to Rasool(s.a.w) and again claimed his punishment, Rasool(s.a.w) told him that his Salah (prayer) got his sins annulled.  So, we see that prayer is one of the instruments where almost all our sins get nullified and void.  Additionally, the amount of virtue obtained cannot be ever dreamt, imagined , visualized, or calculated.  This goes a long way to show how great a virtuous act salah is.  No wonder Allah(swt) made it one of the best obligatory acts after Kalima.

For example, if a person utters the word “SubhaanAllah”, Allah(swt) loads his balance;  a balance which could weigh His seven heavens and seven earths and everything in them.  Allah(swt) fills half of the balance with virtues.  If he says, “Alhumdullilah”, He fills the other half also with virtues.  Can anyone, however great a mathematician they be - with the most powerful super, super computer, calculate how much these virtuous  are………… THAT IS ALLAH(swt), His benevolence, mercy, and grace.  Can anyone imagine His greatness? Can anyone imagine His benevolence or His mercy for that? Impossible!!

Now, coming back to salah; how many times do we utter Allahu Akbar? How many times do we utter SubhaanAllah How many times do we utter Alhumdullilah?  How many times do we make the rukooh and the sajdaas, how many times do we praise Allah(swt)?  Can you imagine the virtues we get? Can there be any comparison equal to this? Yes, because of this great blessing of Allah(swt),   He even warns us that if anyone neglects salah willfully or purposely, he will be a Kafir.  All the obligatory acts are like these.  Because of the abundant virtues they fetch and because of the great amount of sins they erase,  Allah(swt) makes them compulsory.  All the compulsory acts are a great blessing to us, which if we know, we would compete with each other to perform them to earn the virtues and erase our sins.

Allah(swt) gives many, many opportunities in this short life-span to erase our sins and build our paradise, so we could reside in the most tremendous, immense, and powerfully joyous and blissful place.  If you say one SubhaanAllah, a tree will be planted in your paradise.  The size of that tree would be - if a person with a very fast horse were to travel nonstop for 100 years, he would not be able to cross that tree’s shade.  Can you imagine how big that tree would be? And for all your acts of virtues, this is how your paradise would be decorated: With trees, streams, palaces, and many more things, which you have not even dreamt of or imagined and over and above this would be the benevolence and Mercy of Allah which knows no bounds.  For Rasool(s.a.w) says; the entire earth and all its joys put together will not equal to a mosquito’s wing when compared to paradise.  That will be the true joy and a great blessing of Allah(swt).

In one instance, Rasool(s.a.w) on a Jummah day in Ramadan, when climbing up the pulpit for his Friday sermon (Kutba), uttered Ameen, at each of the three steps.  As this was completely a different practice from his usual acts, the Sahabas asked him ; “Ya Rasoolullah, why did you say Ameen three times at each of the steps.” Rasool(s.a.w) said, “Gibriel(a.s) came to me while I was at the first step and said, “The person who gets to live through Ramadan and does not get paradise , let him be ruined and devastated” and I said Ameen.  While on the second step, Gibriel(a.s) said, “Those who hear my {Rasool(s.a.w)’s}  name and do not say salawat on his name, let them be ruined and devastated”.  I said ameen.  On the third step, he said, “Those who have aged parents and thru their services to them, those who cannot get paradise, let them be devastated and ruined” and I said Ameen to that.

In all these 3 occasions, such great virtues are bestowed on these persons.  For example, if a person gets to stay in Ramadan, the amount of virtues that person would get is of tremendously huge proportion.  All his sins get wiped out and if he cannot use this occasion to be victorious in Ahira, his staying on this earth is useless.  The main purpose of this Earth is to seek paradise and if a person cannot seek paradise with these great blessings of Allah(swt), it is useless of his stay on this earth.

Similarly, through a weak hadith, we can understand the magnanimity of the occasion;  Gibriel(a.s) says ; “Counting the number of stars is within my ability, counting the entire number of  leaves on all the plants and trees is within my ability, counting the number of sands in the seashore is within my ability, counting the number of fishes in the sea is within my ability;  but counting the number of virtues a person gets for reciting salawat on Rasool(s.a.w) is beyond my capacity.”

So, we know how much of virtues a person derives by these simple acts and how much of the sins get wiped out.  If they cannot use these simple actions to become victorious, their stay on Earth is useless.  Similarly, serving the parents is such a great virtuous act.  The amount of virtues knows no bounds and all their sins are forgiven – in another instance Prophet(s.a.w) said “Paradise lies at the feet of one’s mother”.

For example, Rasool(s.a.w) said if you can make your father smile, that is as good as doing Hajj.  So how much virtuous act it would be to serving them and pleasing them; and remember, this was said by Allah(swt) the greatest of being to His Arc angel, Gibriel(a.s), the greatest of the Angels, in the month of Ramalhan, the greatest of months, on the day of Jummah, the greatest of the days, the time of Jummah, the greatest of the hour, to Rasool(s.a.w), the greatest of messengers of Allah(swt) and he said Ameen to it.  Can this ever be false? Impossible!!

So please understand, Allah(swt)’s great mercy towards mankind and the number of opportunities to erase our sins and multiply our sins is innumerable.  If you avail some of them also, you would be tremendously victorious,  but if you could avail all of them, your status knows no bounds in paradise.  And mind you, all these acts are simple and easy for any believer to do and it is Satan, who makes it most difficult for people to gain these blessings.  For Satan is your avowed enemy -  Be careful of him.  Even with all these blessings, if a person cannot enter paradise, it is his own ill-fortune or fate, created by his own self, and none other than himself to be blamed upon;  and certainly not Allah(swt).  For,  Allah(swt) the Most Magnanimous,  the Most Merciful, and the Most Benevolent being never created anyone for hell, including Satan - it is they themselves who with their own total freedom who have chosen hell for themselves:

"Because of (the deeds) which your (own) hands sent forth: for Allah is never unjust to His servants.
Quran- 8:51

He, (Allah(swt)) blesses and rewards the righteous and punishes the evil and there shall not be an atom’s injustice in what He does and there shall be no partiality or biases in any of His actions or judgment – should we not be MOST honored, and happy to have a Lord, who is so very impartial and just in all his dealings.

May Allah(swt) in His infinite Benevolence, Mercy, and Grace guide us to understand and follow His religion without any misunderstanding or confusion and with ease follow the Quran and Hadees and be one amongst the foremost  and primary staunch TRUE Muslims and help us to reach the highest paradise without any questions being asked (ameen, ameen, ameen, valhumdu lillahi Rabbil aalameen).

Wishing You ALL THE VERY BEST
